What?
  • The Man Junk Spot
    • “Man Junk Spot” sounds ugly, but the name has some meaning. I skate all the time at this abandoned lot in Manayunk where a small community of skaters have built a makeshift skate park. For a while it was called the Manayunk Spot, but that's a little bit difficult to type and a common autocorrect is Man Junk Spot. Ever since then, I've referred to it by that name.
  • Skate Culture
    • Skateboarding culture is on the up and up. I see people all over the city skating. It's not the same crime-ridden culture it has been made out to be in the past. There is a large diversity of positive reasons for why people skate and choose to interact with the culture. I skate to push myself forward physically and mentally. I like that I can learn at my own pace and explore whatever aspect of skating interests me, without having to answer to anyone but myself. I find skating relaxes me and helps me keep a level head when I feel overwhelmed in other parts of my life. I use skating to express myself creatively, using the footage and imagery from skating. I also have found the people who skate are open-minded, and more accepting of independent or alternative thinking. Skaters are one of the most inclusive groups of people I've ever met. I started skating because I felt rejected by many other communities and I could skate by myself. I was welcomed by skateboarding in such a positive way that it helped me break out of my shell. People wanted to help me learn, got hyped for me when I would succeed, and would show support by filming me and including me in video projects. I have felt inspired not just to skate, but to create art and express myself as a graphic design artist through skating. Skateboarding attracts odd, different, unique, creative, weird, expressive, emotional, compassionate, hardworking, and forward-thinking people. This is a community of people who push for positive change and it's a community I will always advocate for.
  • A Little About Me
    • My name is Sonny Kielblock. I'm a graphic designer and a skater. I'm in my final semester studying graphic design at University of the Arts in Philadelphia. I think I have a lot to offer and I believe I have a unique outlook on design principles. I'm not afraid to break rules or create something new. I currently enjoy the web medium, but I feel confident to take on any project and adapt in whatever way it takes to overcome any design challenge. I'm excited to work with a company in-house, or with a design firm, but I am most eager to work freelance and work with many different projects.
